If you have
an important message or article to tweet that you require maximum exposure or
Click thru rate for, one of the most important factors that should be
considered is the day and time in which your tweet is sent.
If you have
a large following timing can mean the difference between a .5% or a 2% (or more)
Click Thru Rate (CTR), which for a following of 5,000 twitters is a low of 25
clicks up to 100+ clicks. In internet marketing terms a 2% CTR could mean
between 1 and 3 sales.
So what
factors should you consider when deciding the best time to tweet?
Country of target audience
In the
majority of cases the US should or will be your target audience; however in
some scenarios such as a country focused
niche (i.e. Australian Muscle Cars) you will focus that a different country (therefore
a different tweet time) .
The point here is to determining the
country in which the majority of your followers reside.
What time are most tweeters sending
& reading tweets?
Personal
experience backed up by studies has shown more internet users are online for
personal reasons (tweeting, checking internet banking, personal emails, etc)
between the following time periods:
|
Weekdays
|
11:30am –
12:15 pm before lunch
1:00 pm –
1:30 pm after lunch
After 6
pm after work
|
|
Weekends
|
Sunday
after 6pm
|
So now that
you know the country of your target audience and the time in which most users
are online for personal reason you can determine the best time to tweet for
maximum exposure and CTR
This is all
good information but what if you live in a different country such as myself and
my target market is the US. But the sweet time to tweet to my niche is 1:30am my
time?
In this scenario
there is a free service called TweetLater http://www.TweetLater.com that allows
you to pre-create and load up a tweet or series of tweets to be sent at the
time you specify. This service is does more than just allow you to schedule
your tweets and is well worth a look.
Testing
for greater success
If
something can be tested then it can be improved!! So even though you assume you
have selected the best time to tweet, don’t think that tweet timing cannot be
improved.
I recommend
that each time you send a tweet with URL you shrink it with a service such as
bit.ly (for analytics/visitor tracking) this will allow you to collect stats of
click thru rates over time which you can use to further improve your twitter
read and click thru rates.
Each time I
shrink a URL for use on twitter I take note in a spreadsheet of the following
information
Original URL | Shrunk URL |Time sent | My Current # of followers | CTR
Approximately
1-2 days after tweeting a URL I check the bit.ly info for my link to find out
the number of clicks it had. Now it’s just a matter of calculating the tweets click
thru rate by dividing your number of twitter followers at the time by the total
number of clicks the URL had. Note this down in your spreadsheet, after you
have been tweeting for a while you will know the sweet time for your target
niche.
